Chapter 2

Chapter Two

When Eira woke, she was still in her blue knit sweater and white leggings, but she lay in an underused, strange bed that, while comfortable and warm, was not hers. Chitty also lay sleeping on the pillow next to her, softly purring in her sleep.

Sitting up, Eira took in her surroundings; a roaring fireplace took up nearly half the wall in front of the bed, the walls were a soft, petal pink and cream, and the furniture reminded her almost of a ski lod...

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Author's Note: The song near the end of the chapter is Dandelions (Violin) by Joel Sunny, I suggest listening to it during the scene!

The week passed by in a monotonous crawl. Eira woke, ate breakfast with her ‘family’, took her lessons without complaint, spent an hour a day with The Duchess and her seamstress, she ate lunch alone in her rooms, spent time reading as she walked through the large conservatory, Gilda following everywhere, a...

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Eira was floating on air when she and The Duchess arrived back at the estate an hour later. Not even Duchess Alayya’s scowl could ruin her night as she carried her glass shoes up the stairs in one hand, and her mask in the other.

Once Eira was dressed for bed, her hair undone and the house having fallen silent, she pulled Amara’s hidden purse from under her bed. She hadn’t gone through Mar’s purse out of respect, but she wanted her phone.&nbs...

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Eira was led, not into the gilded throne room, but into an opulent dining hall. The space was dominated by a massive slate gray dining table with at least fifty chairs on either side of it. Now, most of those chairs were empty. At the head of the table sat King Syris, and to his left, both of his daughters.

“Lady Eira Vorenehs, Your Majesty.” Viscount Pembyr announced as she stepped into the room.

Sullivan, my name is Eira Sullivan!...

Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Eira spent the next month learning about her new position. She began teaching Myra and Marie about Ballet, and had a new wardrobe made to her liking, all thanks to the King, who seemed to only do it so she wouldn’t run into the Crystal Forest at the southern border, never to be seen again.

Eira had dressed in a new ‘little black dress’ that stopped at her thighs, a dark gray sweater over it and a pair of comfortable black stiletto heels as she pace...

Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Eira stood in her bedroom, looking at herself in one of the ten gilded mirrors that took up wall space in the large living space. She saw her mother in her soft, lovely face, but it was her dad she saw in her eyes, her winter-white hair, and the resolve in the way she stood.

Valria had finished the gown, and Eira had cried for an hour after Amara had presented it to her. It was a mostly white gown, but about halfway down the Lorcanian lace skirt, the color gra...

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Eira was walking around the huge conservatory two weeks later, reading a book on the history of Astixus when she was cornered by Viscount Pembyr. “Hello My Queen, do you have a moment?” He asked, and he smelled as if he’d drunk a barrel of straight vodka. It made Eira’s stomach roil.

“I am on my way to see the twins in just a few moments, did you need something, Viscount?” She asked, tamping down the nausea rolling around in her s...

Chapter 9

Trigger Warning: Assassination Attempt

Chapter 9

Eira was blissfully almost alone, well as alone as one could be in a palace full of employees, guards, and one of her stepdaughters, who had remained while Syris took Marie on his annual tour of his Kingdom.

“Mother? Are we not doing lessons today?” Myra asked, her voice calm as she peaked her head inside the newly redecorated nursery where Eira was sitting in a green silk nightgown, her...

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Syris did not return immediately, stating in his return letter that he left Eira in charge, so it was her problem.

“Gods, he is such a prick.” Eira said as she paced the throne room five weeks after the attempted assassination. Viscount Pembyr had seemingly vanished after Syris left his estate, and was nowhere to be found in the entire northern hemisphere of Astixus. Eira crumpled the letter in her hand and chucked it into the huge roaring fire in...

Chapter 11

Chapter 11

A month after Ellys’ surprise entrance into the world, it was as if Syris and Eira’s marriage had done a complete three-sixty. Eira and Syris spent most of their time together, and the romance they both craved came out for everyone to witness in small touches, they held hands as they strolled the conservatory together with their son, Syris planted sweet kisses on Eira’s forehead at least once a day for people to see.

Now it was time to intro...

Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Eira burst through the council chamber doors, Fang at her side as she pulled the leather gloves from her calloused hands.

“Verlain, call out for the troops to assemble, Tell Hyrax and Boredei they are to protect my children at all costs. Go now.” Eira said calmly and authoritatively.

“Yes my Queen.” Verlain bowed her head and hurried from the room, her armor jolting when she caught a pauldron on the doorframe.

“My love, wha...
