Mystery
(Fic)
Murder at the museum
by Shirley Holder Platt

A murder only a ghost can solve. But what's a ghost supposed to do when no one can see her? "Sounds interesting!"

Chapter 1

I am a ghost. Not sure how it happened. All my life, people told me I'd go to heaven, hell, or purgatory as soon as I died. Come to think of it, maybe this is purgatory. I do seem to be suspended. Not much to do as a ghost. I can't effect anything on the living plane, which rules out haunting. I tried it, believe me, I couldn't scare you if I wanted to. So what is there to do? Not much. Everything is shades of gray, and not in a sexy way. I guess of everything I miss color the most.

I was an artist...

Chapter 2

The police came first. The place was abuzz with activity. I was disappointed when they didn't draw an outline with chalk. Apparently, Macey was disappointed too. She asked one of the officers and was rewarded with, "this is a murder scene, not a television cop show. Now if you'd kindly let us do our job?"

Macey's face had barely begun to turn red when a photographer showed up and started taking at least a million pictures. The coroner followed right behind.

Caron would have hated it. Her expe...

Chapter 3

Ghost 3

I led her to the restroom near the back exit hoping we'd be left alone. She barged through me and into the room, checked every stall, then turned a steely eye on me.

"Stop acting like an imbecile and tell me what you saw."

"Imbecile? Me? I have been unseen and unheard for six years. What am I supposed to do with my time, huh? I guess you know what it's like, seeing as how you're a ghost, too. Oh, wait. You're not a ghost. Sorry. I'd slap myself up side my head if I only had one....

Chapter 4

On our way back to the meeting room, we agreed that I would snoop around Caron’s office after the detectives left. I suspected that the detective agreed to let me do this knowing I would do it with or without her permission. Since this was a murder, the laptop would be taken as potential evidence. I know all the passwords in this place and gave Caron’s to Bailey. She left her partner questioning the suspects and rushed upstairs to Caron’s office. It might not have been kosher, but Baile...

Chapter 5

While we waited for bolt cutters, Bailey headed back to Caron’s office. She went through the last month’s receipts according to the database and began comparing them to the copies of the thank you letters in Caron’s office. They were all matching perfectly and that wiped the smile right off Bailey’s face. I figured it didn’t take much anyway. I had an idea but didn’t want to share it with her, so I kept it to myself. Finding nothing amiss, Bailey began pacing. I’...

Chapter 6

I made it to the breakroom in time to hear the end of a conversation between Rashaan and Macey. They had their heads close together and were speaking in whispers. Joey was leaving the room, and Felicia was pouring coffee into a pink flamingo mug. Felicia doesn’t drink coffee. She only pours a cup when she wants to eavesdrop. The director wasn’t around. I was sure she was busy doing directory things, like tapping her expensive shoes on the floor impatiently while directing the coroner to get t...
