Chapter 2 The Box

by A. C Paradiso

Chapter Two The Box

It had been almost a year since my grandma had passed. The club was doing better than ever. I still had the necklace. I started wearing it ever since she gave it to me. We had slowly started getting rid of her belongings. One day Holden and I were helping my grandpa go through some of her belongings and we found a cardboard box. It was a little water damaged but otherwise in good shape. The box was labeled in black sharpie Allie & Holden- To open after I pass-Grandma Elise

“What is this?” I asked

“No clue, but it yours of you want it” my grandpa said as he continued to go through boxes in attic

My grandpa soon after left the attic with a box of things he was getting rid of, leaving just Holden and I in the attic. I was still confused looking at the box. I was mustering up the courage to open it.

Finally after what felt like forever I said “HJ come look at this?

Holden stopped going through a box and came over to me.

“What is it?” He asked

“I don’t know. It says to open after my grandma passed. I’ve been trying to get the courage to open for the last few minutes.” Was all I could say

Holden looked at the box for a moment “Open it”

I took a deep breath and opened it, cutting the yellowed tape with a nearby pair of scissors. In the box was a slightly warped copy of the record, two leather journals, a pink envelope and what looked to be a smashed iphone.

“What is all this?” Holden and I said at the same time

I picked up the letter with Allie written on it.

“Should I open it?” I asked as I turned it over in my hand

“Yes, it might explain what all this stuff is” Holden said interested

I took a deep breath and ripped the letter open. There was a note in my grandma’s neat cursive.

Allie,

If you’re reading this I have passed away. I’m at peace my dear. I miss you everyday. I found your smashed phone after you left. As I have never forgotten you, you will never forget me. I never showed this to anyone, not even your grandfather. The necklace has the ability to time travel. I’ve never figured out how, but after I met you I had an adventure of my own. It seems to only work on the granddaughters in the family. You soon should be having your own adventure in time. Maybe you can solve the mystery of why it works. I never understood how Holden traveled with you. I don’t remember how long you were here, but it was long enough for you to become one of my best friends. You tried to explain all this to me as I’m explaining to you now, I just wasn’t ready to hear it. See you soon my dear. One more thing dear Holden is your soulmate, he looks at you the way your grandfather always looked at me.

Love,

Grandma

Elise Jane (Paradiski) Olefield

I stood there for a moment after reading the letter. I just handed it to Holden. He took it and started to read it. I noticed him blush as he read the part about himself. (He tried to hide it but I could tell.) I picked up one of the journals. I was a little tattered, but still in decent shape, Alessa Elise was etched into the leather.

“HJ this journal has my name on it” I said

Holden stopped looking at the letter and picked up the other journal “This one says Elise Jane on it”

We both just stood there in the attic looking from the journals to one another in complete silence. Holden started to flip through the journal in his hand, my grandma’s cursive appeared on the pages.

“The letter said she had an adventure of her own, maybe this is her adventure?” I said as noticed the writing on the page

Holden just looked at me and said “ Maybe, this is weird. We should be heading home. We have our presentation in history tomorrow.”

I nodded coming out of the confused trance I was in. I looked at the other journal and it was completely blank, except for the first page which had a message from my grandma. Allie write your adventure here -Grandma

I shook my head in disbelief “You’re right we should. Put everything back in the box. I’ll look at it more tonight.”

Soon after we left the attic. I took the box with me. I spent the rest of the night reading the first journal. It was all about my grandma’s story. She herself had an adventure in time after I did. That itself is another story. I had to stop reading and get some sleep. Holden and I had our presentation the next day. We were doing a presentation on the 1950s in history class. We both had the idea of subtly dressing 1950s for our presentation.

I got to school that day almost late (I had overslept from reading the journal). I rushed to class just as the last bell rang. Holden was waiting outside the classroom for me.

“Allie, come on we’re first up, everything is ready to -” He stopped and looked at me for a moment

“What!? Is something wrong?” I said in a confused rush

“The necklace it glowing” he said as he came closer to me

He touched it and before either one of us could react everything shimmered around us. Everything spun faster and faster, quickly the hallway changed around us as if we were jumping through time, faster and faster time shimmered around us. Then it just stopped. Everything was completely still.
