After school Charlie caught up with me in the hallway. I really didn’t want to talk to him. I was totally embarrassed, and his constant grinning didn’t help any.
“Hey, Lulabelle, wait up!” I stopped where I was and waited for him to catch up to me while flip-flops started in my stomach. “Are you okay? I mean, after you fell on the steps and all.”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” He would have to bring that up. He just might be in the doghouse yet.
“It looked like it might hurt, but you weren’t crying or anything.”
“It didn’t hurt that bad.” Not as much as wrecking my hair.
“Glad you didn’t get hurt then.” We walked in silence to our lockers. “Do you walk home?” he asked after we had stashed our stuff.
“Yeah, with my friends, Allison and Megan.”
“Me, too,” he responded. “Can I walk with you?”
