Chapter Fifty-Eight

The doctor had followed the wagon back to the Gardner residence, helping Jason to get his dad back inside the house. Dan was given a dose of pain reliever once he had been laid on his bed and made as comfortable as possible.

He slept soundly for a couple of hours. His thrashing and moaning brought a hurried intrusion from Ellen. He was turning his head, flailing his arms. “No. Nooo. Don’t push. Get back.”

“Melanie, run to the water spout and wet a washcloth. Hurry.” She stroked Dan’s forehead, new lines forming around her eyes and mouth. Lord, please heal him quickly. Please ease his pain. And please give Jason the strength to take care of his own duties as well as his dad’s.

“Sshhh, be still, dear. Everything will be alright.”

Melanie arrived with the washcloth and knelt on the floor beside her mother. “I told Sarah Beth to keep Nana company, Mama. Is daddy going to be okay?”

Ellen looked at her oldest daughter. A smile tugged at the corners of her lips, a faint smile. “Yes, sweetie. He’s going to be laid up for a while but he’ll be back out with the cows in a week or two. The bone in his leg has to grow back together.”

“When he wakes up should I read to him? Will that make him feel better, Mama?”

“Maybe for a few minutes at a time at first. He will need lots of sleep. You can carry his food...
