Chapter 1
Mouse

Lift one shoulder and drop it, keep your face expressionless, show nothing.

“I asked you the boy’s name, isn’t he a friend of yours? Aren’t you worried about him?” Officer Hound was living up to his nickname, big, sad brown eyes, and a determination like a dog with a bone. He wasn’t ever going to let this go.

“It ain’t my business. He likes it alone.”

“Isn’t your business,” the cop automatically corrected.

Chapter 2
Ashleigh

I’d been doing a lot of thinking about my future. I still thought I could be a doctor if I could get the marks for a good school. Or a lawyer, although I didn’t know what that would be like. I’d seen a lot of TV shows about doctors, but I hated shows about lawyers, they were always assholes. But either way, I really had to do something about my marks. I was barely passing.

And I would need either a scholarship or a band to recognize me. There was no way I could pay for like e...

Chapter 3
Willow and Sam

The sun set early in November in Canada, like 7pm early. And it got cold fast as soon as the sun went down.

I pulled my parka closer but didn’t zip it up. It was only November, probably only five below. It would be thirty below by February, I needed to toughen up.

Willow was dressed to the nines, totally glammed out. Silver sparkley eyeshadow, pink streaks in her hair, even sequined shoes. At least it hadn’t snowed yet.

We turned the corner from Nicholas street down to the b...

Chapter 4
Faraj

A couple weeks had passed since the horrifying Halloween party. I hadn’t seen the girl again. I didn’t even know her name. I was equal parts disappointed and relieved. My body wanted to find her, especially late at night. It insisted on replaying what had happened in the bathroom. It was exciting, if you know what I mean.

It was also humiliating. The boys at school talked about sex a lot. I think most were lying about their experiences. How could they do so much? Where did they le...

Chapter 5
Willow and Sam

Okay, this was a let-down.

After Willow had been so worried about my reaction, I'd expected the place to be wall to wall drag queens or something. At least to be all rainbow coloured everything. It was the Rainbow club or something, after all. So it should have been sparklier. Like frigging winged unicorns vomiting glitter and rainbows on everything.

But it looked like hole-in-the-wall coffee shop. Like that organic place on Somerset and Booth. Mismatched tables, Every chair different....

Chapter 6
Lynn

It was fucking cold out here.

I hated this corner. The wind came right off the river and got your face damp as well as cold. My nose was redder than my lipstick. Even with the streetlight out, people would hesitate before buying from me. And it didn't help that the streets were lined with cheap-ass hookers.

I would never sell my ass that way. Drugs were paying enough, and no gross stranger got to shove his tongue down my throat. Of course, their regulars were chasing off my regulars. None of ...

Chapter 7
Mouse

I was pretty tired. We'd been looking for Mikey for hours. I'd run out of usual places ages ago. Now I was out of unlikely and almost out of impossible. Where the hell was he?

We were stumbling along Daly street, okay I was stumbling. Elvis looked tired too, but not walk into a wall tired.

"Mikey would've found a place to kip for the night by now. I told you, he hides a lot. He ain't stupid enough to be out after it gets dark. You can't see what's waiting."

Hound squatted to look me in ...
