They were at the hospital forever it seemed like. They looked at Katie's face and made sure no bones were broken in her face. She was fine to be discharged, just black and blue and a little dehydrated. Buck was fine as well. The gunshot was a through and through so he only needed stitches and some pain medicine. Sergeant Haskins stopped in to check on both of them. "Katie?" He asked as he peeked his head in the room. Katie looked over at him from the chair she was in. "So, you're the girl that's been driving my town crazy huh," he joked as walked up to the bed Buck was lying in, in the emergency room. "Yeah, I guess I am. Thank you for helping my dad and friends out. I really can't thank you enough. I don't even want to think of how this could've turned out." She said looking up at him. "Well, I will tell you. What Buck did wasn't the smartest but it worked. I'm just glad that Tate was a lousy aim." He said as he looked over at Buck lying in the bed. "Me too boss, me too."Buck managed to say amidst the pain medicine he was on. They all gave a small chuckle. "So, what are they going to do now?" Randy asked Sergeant Haskins. "Well, he replied with a sigh."He will be arraigned and sent to jail. No doubt he will be sentenced to quite a few years for what he did. He has an array of charges against him. Stalking, kidnapping, attempted murder, harassing phone calls just to name a few."Sergeant Haskins said. "I don't think you will have to worry about him ever again." "Phone calls?" Katie asked. "Yeah, some man called your dad and gave them some kind of message about where you could be found. Apparently that was Tate disguising his voice. He had a phone set up down stairs when we did the search. "So, that's why he went down there." Katie said. "Yeah, well, it's all over now, y'all can get a good night's sleep tonight." Randy took a deep sigh of relief. "That is the best news I have heard in a long time, now maybe we can get our lives back together too." Randy said. There was a knock at the door and Matt stuck his head in. "Katie, can I talk to you a minute?" Matt asked.
"Sure." She said as she stood up. She leaned over Buck and kissed him on the forehead. "I'll be back, don't you go anywhere." She laughed. He reached out and took her hand as she turned to go. "Katie," he slurred, "I will never leave you, ever." She giggled and leaned over to kiss him and he stopped her. "What's wrong, Buck?" Katie asked. "Oh nothing," he said, "I just can't feel my lips right now and I don't want to miss how great yours feel on mine." She blushed as she walked out. She walked with Matt outside. The night breeze was warm on her skin. The air was or seemed to be so much easier to breathe. "They're going to be putting Tate away for a long time." She told Matt as they walked along the sidewalk. " Yeah, yeah, That's what I heard, I'm glad about that, Katie. He will get what he deserves." Matt said as he rubbed the back of his neck. Katie stopped walking and stood in front of Matt. "Thanks for coming out here, Matty. I know the letter I left was hurtful and I feel so bad running out on your parents like I did." Katie said as she looked into his eyes. "Well, they're main concern was that you were alright and they are glad that you are. I showed mom pictures of your face and what that animal did to you and she said that your new nickname should be Rocky." Matt laughed. Katie laughed heartily at that. "Tell her it's a deal." Katie said. "You know," Matt said in a more serious tone. "I was thinking to myself as I stood there watching Buck today and I gotta be honest with you. I don't know if I could've done that. That took a lot of guts on his part. He could've been seriously hurt or killed today." Matt went on. The thought of that rocked Katie to the core and she knew then more than ever...
