A stranger's unexpected kindness

A most pleasant, unexpected thing happened to me. I had some business to take care of in Kaiserslautern. After I finished, I needed to fill up my tank before heading home. So I pulled into a Shell gas station near Ramstein Air Base. As I rolled in, I noticed a young man standing by the pumps. He wore a red and yellow outfit, the same colors as the Shell company. From his uniform, I surmised that he worked for the company in some capacity.

After I stopped at a pump, the young man came up to me and started speaking to me in German. A bit startled but not in a frightening way, I told him in my limited German that my German was not that good. It settled me down when he spoke to me in perfect English. “I can help you. I can pump your gas for you.” My heart just smiled.

The last time I got this kind of service at a gas station was decades ago! I tend to read people right of...
