Comment of the Moment: “It’s past midnight, and we’re not to disturb him unless we’re being attacked.”



The hour was late when the communications expert, Sergeant Goejja, finally arrived.

Sergeant Gisulja asked Sergeant Goejja, “Why would a satellite phone beep and then the battery apparently go dead?”

Sergeant Goejja replied, “How do you know it beeped and then died?”

“I’m just repeating what our fundamentalist patrons told me.”

“Okay, how do they know it beeped and then died?”

“They were monitoring an American soldier’s encrypted satellite phone.”

“Wait, how could they monitor its transmissions? Those military things are usually highly encrypted.”

“Yes, but our experts had hacked this phone’s encryption for them and had sold the data and procedure to the fundamentalists.”

Goejja tried another approach, “Okay, what did our hackers tell the fundamentalists about how to handle intercepting an encrypted call?”

“I do not know, Sergeant. I was not there.”

Sergeant Goejja thought for a minute. Then he asked, “So, it beeped. How long after it beeped did it stop transmitting?”

“I don’t know. Maybe a minute.”

Exasperatedly, Goejja asked, “So, when did the monitoring technician break the connection on his end? Or when did he stop listening?”

“When the phone stopped transmitting altogether.”

“Hmmph. That must be the answer.”
