Chapter 13: The LBRs

by Robert Albert

Chapter 13 - LBRs

Sarah Frank, a brain surgeon, smiling as she walked lively down the hall, Sarah seemed happy.

A male doctor jogged to catch up with her. Slim and trim and handsome with an iron melting smile, he said, “Sarah, wait.”

Sarah stopped and turned back to him. “Wyatt, what’s up?”

Wyatt responded, “Sarah, what a wonderful life-saving heart operation you performed back there. I’m glad I got to assist!”

Sarah continued toward the hospital door, soon to be on her way home, with a stop at the Mill Pond Trail first. Sarah had begun to work less and walk the trail twice a day, over seven miles, while keeping track of calories. She has taken off almost 20 pounds already. As she walked, Sarah had something to say to everyone. Finally, after about a half hour of short discussions, Sarah finally walked out of the rear hospital entrance at Waterbury hospital.

Sarah walked across the doctors’ parking lot to her car. She had a procedure for getting in the car. First, open the door and use the motorized controls to move driver’s seat all the way back. Then she slowly backed her ample rear end into the driver’s seat until she almost made contact with the seat. At that time, she let go and fell back into the seat experiencing the car rocking on its shock absorbers. Then she used the motorized driver’s seat to move to the best position for her arms and legs.

Now firmly implanted in the car, Sarah headed for Scoville’s eventually parking at the swimming area parking lot. The Exodus from the vehicle turned out to be a bit difficult with gravity working against her instead of with her. She had to move the seat back as far as possible, then swing her feet out and use the balance strap over the car door to pull herself up and out of the car. This procedure became Sarah’s only gymnasium type workout, and she sometimes did it more than once for the exercise value it provided.

Sarah shimmered one step at a time out of the parking lot and past the old stone church onto the trail of sandy gravel and began the trek around Scoville’s pond. Now, if you think about it, Sarah had more persistence than any of us. For someone in her physical condition to walk twice around the trail, over 7.5 miles, it took unyielding dedication and perseverance. But, there she trudged, using her brain to train her body, like training your dog! She self-trained hard and intended to continue until she weighed 150lbs.

Sarah saw one Lady Bug Rock at mile marker 3.5 just after passing the dam. (Note: she started close to that mile marker and would move the beginning soon.) At mile marker 0 past the boat ramp, she saw two and walked on by them. She paused to look at the uninterrupted view of the pond about a half a mile or so in any direction. She saw people fishing from kayaks!

A long stretch of level ground along the dike took her to mile marker .25 where she gasped at the sight of two ladybug rocks in front her on the path and two behind her on the trail. At tag .5, she counted eight surrounding her and moved with her.

At .75 there were 8 Lady Bug Rocks (LBRs) moving with her. Sarah loved Steven King books. Now she felt like one of the protagonists in one of his books. At 1.0, she counted 16. Most curiously, they hummed Neil Diamond melodies.

At 1.25 there were now 32, and Sarah no longer had to count. She knew the numbers increased by a power of 2 for each .25 miles. She had just passed the clearing with the pond on her left and mansions on her right. Right about there, the LBGs opened a way to a path that headed away from the Mill Pond Trail. Sarah, in no hurry to find out how militant the LRBs could be, walked toward the opening as the number increased to 64.

The LBRs started to jump up and down with agitated frequency. Sarah tried to run but kept falling and wasting time picking herself up to continue. The LBRs got closer and closer to each other as they increased in number to 128.

Suddenly, the LBRs flew into the sky forming a red and black line and flying out of sight! When Sarah looked down from that view, she found herself in the middle of a group of people standing around a cluster of three trees with a grave-sized hole in the middle of them!

Sarah screamed, “Did you see them? Did you see the Lady Bug Rocks that chased me here?”

Jake Anderson said, “No! The only thing I sensed seemed to be Neil Diamond tunes in the background just before you showed up. Were you singing? Ah, you have hospital scrubs on. Did you dip into the drug supply? Just kidding. Are you OK?”

Sarah replied, “Yes, I am now, but I’m going wherever you are going. Exactly, where are you going?”

Jake said, “I’m Jake Anderson, from the Wolcott police. I called for backup, and when they arrive, we are going down that hole. You will have plenty of options when they get here.
